UW-La Crosse coach Ken Koelbl cautioned not to read too much into his team's impressive victory over NCAA Division II power Winona State on Monday night.
It was, after all, an exhibition game. Both teams entered the contest 0-0, and left 0-0. Still, it was hard not to be impressed by the Eagles' 82-77 victory over a program that has played in three Division II championship games in the past five years and won two of them. UW-L, for much of the game, outplayed and outhustled the Warriors. The Eagles started strong, built a 9-1 lead, then controlled the tempo for most of the game. I know coaches have to limit the expectations, but this could be the best UWL basketball team in many years.
